Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Partnership

We are a group of 11 organizations – representing schools, service providers, and local government agencies – working together through youth-adult partnerships to promote health and healthy messages, and to reduce the social, emotional and physical consequences of alcohol and other drug (AOD) abuse.

The Redwood City and North Fair Oaks Prevention Partnership aims to foster a community in which it is easier for people to make healthy choices in their day-to-day lives.  We work alongside individuals of all ages and backgrounds to raise awareness of the issues and problems related to AOD and the positive things all of us can do to make a difference.  Our goals are:

  • Youth participate in meaningful activities and are connected to their schools, families and communities.
  • Healthy policies discouraging AOD use are created and/or enforced.
  • Youth access and availability to alcohol and drugs decrease.
  • Reduced acceptance of youth alcohol and drug use/abuse.

Strategy 1: Mobilize and support ongoing Steering Committee to be informed about and advocate for community based prevention efforts, coordinate collaborative program planning delivery and leverage available resources through existing initiatives (Community Youth Development, Community Schools, Sequoia Teen Resource and Wellness Initiative)

Strategy 2: Work in partnership with local merchants on issues related to healthy corner stores and AOD access.

Strategy 3:  Support local policies and laws which promote health and discourage AOD use.

Strategy 4: Increased community exposure to messaging about environmental factors that contribute to and prevent AOD abuse and promote positive lifestyle choices

Strategy 5: Provide community education and opportunities for participation in activities/projects related to AOD access, norms, and healthy lifestyle choices, which are grounded in Youth Development.

Current Activities:

  • Healthy Corner Stores:  Partner with local stores to decrease signage and accessability  of alcohol to minors and increase healthy options.  Connect “Healthy Corner Stores” with Redwood City schools in close proximity to strengthen the connection between built environments and the students that live, go to school and shop there
  • Photovoice:  Create visual images and use images to inform and spark dialogues, For the purpose of raising awareness about what is going on for teens regarding AOD, and the mixed messages youth get about alcohol and drugs from their communities and families, So that youth receive more consistent support for and clearer messages about healthy choices.
  • Assess public perception and opinion on youth access to AOD in the family environment and inform families about the growing issue in our community - For morinformation about these activities click here.

About the Initiative:

In addition to the four environmental wellness goals, RWC 2020 has led the Redwood City/North Fair Oaks Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Partnership for the past four years.  This effort, funded primarily by San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, brings public and private sector organizations together with local youth and store owners to reduce the social, emotional and physical consequences of AOD.  To lead the Initiative, Redwood City 2020 partners with Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center (PCRC) to provide facilitation, project management and community engagement services.
